Creating a Safe and Relaxing Massage Room
May 21, 2013
As massage therapists, we all know that a great massage is not solely about the techniques used or the experience of the therapist. It is also about providing your clients with a safe and relaxing environment where they can fully enjoy the session.
Here are 5 tips for creating a massage room setting which will be inviting and enjoyable for clients of all ages:
- Keep the room temperature comfortable - Provide a space heater in your massage room or heated pad on your massage table in case your client is chilled. Remember that although you are warm (probably hot if you have been performing massage all day), clients may not be, especially if they are removing their clothes when it’s cold outside.
- Provide support for your client’s body - Use a bolster or pillow for support under your client’s ankles when they are in the prone position. When your client is in the supine position, support the client’s low back by placing a bolster or pillow under your client’s knees.
- Create a relaxing atmosphere - Play relaxing music in your massage room to put your client at ease. If you prefer, you can also use light aromatherapy to create a relaxing setting.
- Create a trusting relationship during the massage session - Ask for feedback from your clients often. This shows interest in their well being (or current condition) and allows your client to place trust in you. Avoid using open ended questions such as “How is the pressure?”, instead ask “Should I use more or less pressure?”
- Create security before and during the massage session if your client will be undressing - Provide complete privacy for changing and adequate draping for security. Draping, at minimum, should include a full size sheet and a blanket (or towel) to cover your client during the session. Only the body part being massaged should be uncovered.
